Meknes & Volubilis – Full day
This full day excursion starts after a leisurely breakfast taking a one hour drive to Meknes the journey will expose you to vast vineyards and exceptional views. Once we arrive in Meknes you will have time to explore the many souks, narrow walkways, historical sites and enjoy lunch Sultan Moulay Ismail thought of Meknes highly and thus it became the capital city of Morocco during his reign in 1700. Moulay Ismail thought greatly about horses too creating an amazing 12,000 capacity stables with its own reservoir, the mausoleum, Rouah, Place el-Hedim, and the central pedestrian square in the Medina are all places that you should take time to see.
Following your lunch we will continue onward towards the settlement of Moulay Idriss approximately 30 km north onto the hillside. Moulay Idriss is a site of pilgrimage and of great spiritual importance to Muslims and is the site of the prominent Moroccan saint of who the settlement is named after he is also a great grandson of the prophet Mohammed. The beautiful ornate green tiled shrine has limited access but the many narrow streets leading to spectacular vantage points with beautiful views over the valley towards Volubilis are well worth the climb and a break in the journey.
Our journey then continues for a short while and onto the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Volubilis the largest and best preserved Roman ruins in Morocco with mosaics and views of the Rif Mountains which are stunning at sunset. The site offers guided tours of an official guide which is reasonably priced and good value for money if you are interested in detail of the area’s history. We will return to Fes early evening and in time for dinner.
