Day trip to the middle Atlas Mountains
After a leisurely morning we will leave around 10am from your hotel or Riad in our vehicles for a breath-taking 30 km road journey full of mountainous views and beautiful sites. Stopping at the small town of Sefrou where we can explore the pretty waterfalls nearby or the towns small medina where on Thursdays its market day with its traditional Souk selling traditional products and unique souvenirs. This normal quiet town which is a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of Fez becomes very lively during the Cherry Festival in early June when for three days stalls, entertainers and celebrations provide an electric atmosphere enjoyed by all.
Our journey will continue onwards to Bahlil passing remains of a French military outpost and exhilarating views of the Rif Mountains in the distance and surrounding countryside. Bahlil is a pretty little town with interesting cave houses which are still used today and can be visited and explored with a guide.
We will then continue our journey along a windy road with views of the countryside as we start to climb higher into the mountains towards the French-built hill station of Immouzèr Du Kandar at an altitude of 1,220m built in the 1920’s where we will stop at the Kasbah and take a look at the little medina whilst seeing the view of the beautiful Saiss Plateau and distant Fez. Our journey continues upwards to the town of Ifrane a French alpine town where you could be mistaken for being in the Swiss alp’s as opposed to Morocco at a height of 1,650m with cedar forest and even a ski slope and houses which look like they should be in a mountain in Switzerland.
Lunch will be enjoyed in this mountain range then we will continue along past the cedar forests to Azrou where we will have time for a short walk into the forest with the possibility of seeing or maybe even feeding some Barbary macaques we will the leave the forest at around 4 o’clock heading back to Fez and arriving with time to refresh before dinner.
